We have sidewalks!!!
I don't know why but they make me so giddy. Maybe because it is such a visual change, a major upgrade.
Before the sidewalk could be poured on the east side, the gas man came and laid new pipe. Kudo's to them! They showed up just when we needed them. Nicest bunch of guys you would ever want to meet. We try to keep soda and water stocked in the frig for when they are working on our street :) There is a big gas line project going on in our town. It's going to be a long summer, but we are thankful for their hard work.
The crew made a really neat discovery while excavating for the sidewalk on the west side of the building.
Part of the original cobblestone road from the 1860's |
Of course I had to stand on it and take a picture for posterity. After all, no one had stood on it in well over a 100 years. |
Looks pretty good! |
Along day three the crew was getting a little tired and grumpy.
A Jacks Donuts run and hydration was in order. Makes every day better. |
Inside the excavation began. Lots of old brick and dirt to be moved and hauled away.
While digging along the inside foundation, Mark made a pretty cool find. A hand forged latch. He also found a horseshoe. |
These are bits and blocks where heavy pieces of machinery had stood on in the past. |
In the back east add on section a lot of sand had to be removed before we could think about putting in the radiant floor heat.
This is Doug, our heating guy. He has been a blessing and so great to work with.
Lots of leveling going on, getting ready to lay the insulation for the radiant floor heat.
I think the insulation installation was Mark's favorite part. It's like Legos for adults. lol
Manifold for the heating system. |
It's going to be another busy week. The concrete will be poured and more of the heating system put in. We are still planning, dreaming, rearranging ideas in our heads and on paper. It's hard work but we feel like we are living the dream. I love watching the people that walk up and down our street and think that one day they will be stopping in to visit our future establishment. I also wonder what Mr. Graf and Mr. Wallace would think if they could see their building today and the plans we are making for it. No longer a place for carriages and horses but for people, food and community. They were men of ideals and progress, I like to think they would be pleased.
